Who Are the Wanniya-laeto (Forest Dwellers)
The Veddahs—or as they refer to themselves, Wanniya-laeto ('inhabitants of the great forest')—are the indigenous aboriginal descendants of Sri Lanka’s prehistoric Balangoda Man (Homo sapiens balangodensis), whose presence on the island stretches back more than 16,000 continuous years. Long before early dynasties arrived, the Wanniya-laeto navigated the island’s southern and eastern woodlands in complete symbiotic equilibrium with the wild.
Their worldview is fundamentally animist: trees, granite outcroppings, clear streams, and wild beasts are inhabited by ancestral spirits known as Nae Yaku. When an elder departs this life, they join this benevolent spirit realm to protect the surviving hunters and gatherers. Their relationship with nature is governed not by ownership or exploitation, but by reverence, taking only what is needed for sustenance and giving gratitude before crossing any river or taking honeycomb from ancient rock faces.
