Navigating Sri Lanka's Sacred Inland Horizon
Created in 1948 by damming the sacred Gal Oya river, the Senanayake Samudraya is the largest reservoir inland sea in Sri Lanka. Spanning over 7,800 hectares of pristine fresh water studded with granite hills and forest islands, this vast expanse remains untouched by commercial shipping or noisy motorboats.
Our signature boat safari uses official DWC-authorized safari crafts navigated by experienced local captains who know every channel of the reservoir. Approaching wildlife at low throttle and cutting engines near islands ensures a calm, respectful encounter.
This unhurried approach allows extraordinary wildlife viewing: observing swimming elephant families, nesting sea eagles, and sunbathing mugger crocodiles from a respectful distance without disturbing their natural behavior.

Dawn Expedition Timeline
Every morning on the reservoir is guided by morning mist, bird activity, and elephant feeding routes. Our standard timeline provides an unforgettable rhythm:
Meet your naturalist at our private wooden jetty. Enjoy fresh ginger tea or Ceylon coffee while adjusting your binoculars and receiving a short safety briefing.
Cast off in serene silence. As the boat glides across calm waters, watch white-bellied sea eagles soar from dead tamarind trees, while grey herons and cormorants dive for fish in the pastel morning glow.
Navigate gently between rocky islands. This is the prime time when wild Asian elephants swim across channels to feed on lush island grass, using their trunks like natural snorkels.
Step onto an uninhabited rock island. Your naturalist serves fresh tropical fruits, traditional hopper baskets, fresh curd with Kitul treacle, and French-pressed tea with 360-degree lake panoramas.
Cruise along quiet shoreline coves observing sunbathing mugger crocodiles. Arrive back at the pier with your completed species identification card.
Fauna of the Gal Oya Inland Sea
The blend of evergreen rainforest, savannah grasslands, and deep reservoir waters creates a rich ecosystem for iconic Sri Lankan wildlife.
Wild Swimming Asian Elephant
Elephas maximus maximus
Gal Oya is famous worldwide as the only place where Asian elephants swim between islands to reach fresh feeding grounds. Calves are often seen accompanied by gentle maternal herds.
Mugger Crocodile
Crocodylus palustris
Frequently spotted basking motionless on sun-warmed granite rocks. By idling the engine and drifting quietly at a respectful distance, boats can position safely for clear wildlife photography.
White-Bellied Sea Eagle
Haliaeetus leucogaster
Magnificent raptors with 2-meter wingspans soaring thermal lake currents. Watch dramatic dives as they catch freshwater fish straight off the glassy water surface.
Spotted Deer & Wild Boar
Axis axis ceylonensis
Gather in herds along the green shoreline to graze as morning mist clears, keeping watch along the jungle fringe.

Equipped with compulsory safety life jackets for every passenger, an official DWC wildlife tracker on board, and direct communication with the Inginiyagala park office.
“The reservoir is a sacred corridor. When elephants swim between the islands in the morning stillness, their rhythmic breathing is something no boat should ever rush. Cutting our engines and drifting from a respectful distance lets us exist as quiet witnesses.”
